merciful-like-the-fatherPope Francis has announced that 2016 is the Jubilee Year of Mercy. According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, “Pope Francis emphasizes the need for the Church and all her members to live out the loving mercy that God has for us. Our response to God’s loving mercy towards us is to act in that same way to all those we meet.” (USCCB. Frequently Asked Questions About the Jubilee of Mercy. 2016.)

One of the ways that the Pope encourages us to be merciful is by practicing the corporal works of mercy. They include:

  • Feed the hungry
  • Give drink to the thirsty
  • Shelter the homeless
  • Visit the sick
  • Visit the prisoners
  • Bury the dead
  • Give alms to the poor

As an aid to putting into practice the corporal works of mercy, Deacon Chris Walchuk, Parish Social Ministry Program Director for Catholic Charities, has drafted the following reflections on each one. We hope they will be helpful as you live this Jubilee Year of Mercy.
