Community Impact

RSVP Red Cross Volunteers Active in Watonwan County

Demand for blood is high throughout the winter. Half the nation’s blood supply-six million pints annually-is collected by more than 155,000 Red Cross volunteers. Whether it’s calling for donors, planning a blood drive, registering donors or helping in the canteen passing out snacks and beverages, eight Watonwan County CGRSVP volunteers step up to the plate, giving of their time to help meet a need in demand.

Volunteer Spotlight

Dorothy Hedberg

Dorothy Hedberg grew up in Cotton, MN. Her college years at Gustavas College in St. Peter, is where she would eventually meet her husband Ted and move to St. James.

Dorothy was bestowed the Service to Mankind Award in May 2010. She was nominated for the honor by a friend and fellow RSVP volunteer. Her church involvement stands at the forefront of her volunteering with the many roles she fills at St. Paul’s Church in St. James. Serving on the banner committee, ladies symposium and bible classes are just to name a few.

As a community, we know Dorothy is definitely a do-er. She drives for Wellspring, works with Welcome Baby Quilters, helps at the food shelf, Relay for Life and delivers meals to those homebound. Dorothy’s work history also reveals her caring heart, teaching preschool for 10 years and kindergarten for 11 years.

Dorothy and her husband, Ted, live in St. James. They have one son, David who lives in Shakopee.

When she’s not busy volunteering, Dorothy enjoys planting flowers and gives a helping hand at the greenhouse.
