Volunteer Spotlight
Donald Brand of New Ulm is a True Super Star Volunteer
It comes as no surprise that three years ago, Don received the outstanding senior citizen award at the Minnesota State Fair. Don is board chair of the New Ulm Area Food Shelf and has been active in it for 10 years. He donates a considerable amount of time in his church and with the New Ulm Area Catholic Schools. Don and his wife, Myrtle, are a team delivering meals once a month to those who are home-bound. He was at one time the news director with KNUJ Radio. Spring, summer and fall you can see Don giving tours of New Ulm through the Chamber of Commerce. Don enjoys playing card games at the community & senior center socializing with his friends. CGRSVP is privileged to have Don as one of our volunteers always willing to help out where there is a need in the community.
Community Impact
MRCI Bargain$ Thrift Store
MRCI Bargain$ Thrift Store mission is to create innovative and genuine opportunities for people with disabilities or disadvantages to support their community participation. The thrift store is manned by RSVP volunteers during its hours of operation and all profits ($80,000+ last year) are put back into the community to serve their special clients and their needs. Through the thrift shop proceeds MRCI has been able to provide specially-equipped buses and vans.
The goals of the MRCI Bargain$ Store are to: raise money to help people with disabilities who are served by MRCI; provide a clean, attractive second-hand store where clothing and house hold items can be recycled; provide a way for CGRSVP volunteers to help MRCI in its human service program; and provide items in good condition at prices affordable for most shoppers. Each month, the RSVP/MRCI volunteers donate over 500 hours of their time.
