Catholic Charities’ Common Good RSVP has a new initiative that is spreading like wildfire in small rural communities throughout southern Minnesota. 

Bone Builders is a free osteoporosis prevention exercise class that uses slow motion exercises and light weights to build bone density, improve balance, and increase range of motion and muscle strength. 

Catholic Charities was awarded a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service and the Minnesota Board on Aging to significantly expand the Bone Builders Program in 2011-2012.  Along with local support, these grants have provided for program expansion to rural communities that do not currently have opportunities for seniors to attend exercise programs at no cost.

Bone Builders currently operates in six communities and serves 85 participants.  Locations include Northfield, Faribault, Kenyon, St. Charles, New Richland and Lake Crystal. 

The program will expand to include Lewiston, Waterville and St. James early in 2012, with additional expansion currently under consideration.

Local support for the program has been provided by: AgStar Financial Services, Thrivent for Lutherans of Watonwan County, New Richland State Bank, Merchants Bank, MinnStar Bank, Traditions of Waterville, Shopko, Walmart, the Antrim Fund, Blue Earth County Ag Society, Goodhue County Health and Human Services, and CenterPoint Energy.

Robert Tereba, Catholic Charities' Executive Director, shares words of appreciation with RSVP volunteers at Liberty's Restaurant in Red Wing.

Common Good RSVP volunteers were recognized in Red Wing and Lake City during the last week of October.  Supported by a generous sponsorship from Treasure Island Resort and Casino, volunteers enjoyed a light lunch and a celebration of their accomplishments. 

The appreciation events were hosted by Deb Johnson-Schad, Common Good RSVP Program Coordinator.  Also in attendance were  representatives of local not-for-profit organizations where the volunteers provide service.  Together, they honored the more than fifty volunteers gathered for their contribution of more than 3500 hours of service to the community.

Rochester’s Holy Spirit Catholic Church and Calvary Episcopal Church Support Refugees

 Episcopal Church.  Families are learning about our Bhutanese and Burmese refugees arriving this year.  Weekly gospel reflections have been created to correlate the refugee experience with our call to “Welcome the Stranger.”  Families are donating dollars to assist Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement, remembering that Christ himself was a refugee and fled to Egypt as a child with his parents because of the

Holy Spirit Parish, Advent Refugee Resetlement Project

persecution of King Herod and, later, answered our questions about giving:  “Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?” He will answer them, “Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.”

Willow Creek students stand united and proudly wear gifted Refugee Resettlement wristbands in support of those refugee children arriving in need this year.

Willow Creek students were educated on the lives of our Burmese and Bhutanese refugees by director Mary Alessio.  After learning about refugee children arriving in need, students were inspired to design and sew pillowcases for these children longing for sweet dreams and opportunities to create new beginnings!  Each pillowcase had a note of welcome attached to it.  Special thanks to Ms. Laurie McClaren, their teacher and mentor on this project.

Common Good RSVP volunteers from the Wabasha area gather for a fall volunteer recognition event held at the Eagle’s Nest Coffeehouse in Wabasha, MN. Hosted by Vicki Snyder, Common Good RSVP Program Coordinator, volunteers were thanked for the valuable contributions to the community.  Volunteers donate their time and talent at St Elizabeth’s hospital, the Wabasha-Kellogg food shelf, Wabasha-Kellogg Elementary School and mentoring youth in the community.
