After six months of writing back and forth to their senior citizen pen pals the students of Bridges Community School got to meet with their correspondents.

The “Reasons to Write Project”, helps fourth graders practice their reading and writing skills by exchanging letters with a volunteer from the Retired And Senior Volunteer Program of the group Common Good. Students started writing to their pen pals in November and wrote letters every two weeks. Organizers say it’s always an exciting time for both the kids and volunteers to finally meet their pen pal face-to-face.

Coordinator Lora Brady says, “It’s really evidence of how it doesn’t matter how old you are. You can have a friend at a different age at a different generation.”

Many of the volunteers say they stay in contact with the students even after the program ends, talking on the phone or continuing writing letters.

It’s a part of life.

When he’s not giving tours at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, he’s likely at the Winona Senior Friendship Center socializing with longtime residents.

When he’s not serving as a “book buddy” for Riverway Learning Community’s 4- to 6-year-old students, he’s raising money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the 7 Rivers Region.

And instead of taking some time off to fish by himself, he decided instead to found the Winona chapter of Let’s Go Fishing, which provides boat outings for Winona-area seniors.

Bill’s life didn’t always revolve around volunteering.

After serving in the U.S. Air Force for eight years, Bill worked as an engineer the majority of his life, including 17 years at IBM in Rochester, time at Benchmark Electronics in Winona, and other years in Florida and Singapore. He traveled the world managing various teams that

created electronics.

But looking back over his career, Bill said, not one job brought him as much happiness as his volunteer work does today.

“It’s fun because it’s different all the time,” he said.

The first organization Bill became involved with was the Winona Senior Friendship Center. He began by spending his free time making conversation with the regulars and participating in the various activities.

Bill had always been enthusiastic about fishing, and when the center’s receptionist suggested he host a class on how to fillet a fish, he realized how many were actually interested in the sport. The simple demonstration transformed into a how-to course, and it was then Bill decided to create his own club.

“I had quite a few friends from the classes I had held and it seemed like it would be a good thing to do,” he said.

Bill’s Fishing Club allowed residents to leave the center for an afternoon and spend time outdoors. Bill taught members the basics of fishing, including how to tie a knot and what kind of bait to use, and entertained them with nature watching.

Some members spent the entire trip fishing, while others used the club as an excuse to get outdoors and absorb Winona’s environment.

When Bill discovered Let’s Go Fishing, he realized it was a perfect fit, and founded the Winona chapter.

“There were some people who have lived in Winona their entire lives and have never been on a boat,” he said. “I just want to get them out.”

Since, Bill has raised thousands of dollars, recruited hundreds of participants and hosted dozens of fishing trips. This year his goal is to arrange 100 boating or fishing trips for 1,000 guests.

Bill plans to continue volunteering in the community, sharing his knowledge and experiences to those in need.

“It’s my whole life,” he said.

Some of the questions that 82-year-old Gene Flaten fielded from his Elton Hills Elementary School pen pal were especially cute.

The third-grade girl asked in her letters what Gene would do during recess when he was in elementary school (in the 1930s) and what the name of his favorite teacher was.

A favorite question, though, for the resident of Gramercy Park Cooperative had to do with technology.

“She asked if we used computers when we were in elementary school,” Flaten said.

Flaten was matched with a pen pal through a Catholic Charities program called “Reasons to Write.” The program promotes intergenerational connections, in addition to helping children improve their writing skills, said Guthrie Capossela, who is coordinator of the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program.

Catholic Charities agencies around southern Minnesota work with elementary schools to arrange pen-pal partnerships between seniors and second- through fifth-graders. The pen pals exchange four letters during an eight-week period, then they meet each other during a get-together. In Flaten’s case, the get-together was in the dining room at Gramercy last week.

The program has been in the Rochester area for several years, though this past year has been the most successful, said Heather Weller, administrator at Gramercy Park Cooperative. The cooperative has been the most active in “Reasons to Write,” although seniors at Shorewood Senior Campus and Meadow Lakes Senior Living also have participated.

In addition to answering his pen pal’s questions about computers, Flaten described other highlights of his growing-up years in Granite Falls. He told his pen pal about milking cows by hand and about the 1931 Model A Ford he owned that had three antennas on it but no radio (he’d attach squirrel pelts to the antennas and let them blow in the wind as he drove).

But in answer to the question about activities during school recess, Flaten wrote they’d play marbles, and they’d also sneak across the street to a penny candy store.

Weller said the seniors at Gramercy clearly enjoy the pen-pal exchange.

“These letters would come in, and they would just light up,” she said. “It’s amazing to see the looks on the seniors’ faces.”

Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program was named the United Way Financial Stability Award Winner at the Annual Celebration for Caring and Giving on February 19, 2013. This award of excellence was presented to Director Mary Alessio and her staff at the recent Award Ceremony held at the Canadian Honker Event Center-Ramada Inn. Alessio and her staff were commended for their successful outcome in providing the skills needed for financial stability to newly arrived refugees. Successful outcomes in the area of safe and stable housing, financial literacy training, asset building, and employment were noted. Alessio and her staff are dedicated to providing the skills and training needed for refugees to become contributing members of our community and to use their talents to enhance Olmsted County. Alessio firmly believes that financial capability training and teaching newcomers upon arrival how to budget wisely and save for their needs is a key component needed to succeed in their homes. Catholic Charities provides a 2-day Financial Literacy Workshop for all refugees. Alessio is proud of those refugees who arrive with hopes of a new beginning and who dedicate their efforts to learn and become financially self-sufficient. Alessio believes a dedicated effort in the area of education empowers and provides the skills needed for the refugees to start life anew.
