There are a number of reasons to make a contribution to Catholic
Charities. And there are almost as many ways to give as there
are reasons; whichever option you choose, based on your financial
situation and goals, your gift is an expression of your beliefs
and interests.
Some of the more common methods of contributing to Catholic
Charities are listed below. Catholic Charities, Diocese of
Winona, Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization; donations
are tax deductible in accord with the Internal Revenue Code.
All of the forms of giving listed have potential current and/or
future tax advantages, so we strongly recommend that you consult
with your financial advisor before making a gift.
Ways To Give
Cash (including personal checks,
money orders).
Pledges. You may wish to spread
your gift over an extended period (up to 3 years). If so,
we will send you periodic reminders.
Securities. Depending upon the
nature of the security, you may be able to avoid paying capital
gains tax and take a charitable deduction for the market value
of the security, if you choose to donate marketable securities
to Catholic Charities. Check with your financial or tax advisor
before finalizing such a gift.
For any of the above, consult with your employer regarding
the possibility of "matching" your donation. Many
companies have such a program, which multiplies your gift
and provides you with the opportunity to endorse the works
of Catholic Charities.
Planned Gifts
Often, the most practical means of making a contribution
is through a deferred, or "planned" gift. Such gifts
can be an effective means of maximizing your support for Catholic
Charities.
Bequests are a simple and effective
way to remember Catholic Charities in your will. This is easily
accomplished through a codicil (an amendment to an existing
will naming an additional beneficiary).
Charitable Remainder Trusts pay
you, the donor, an income for life or some other specified
period. At the end of the trust term, use of the trust assets
and income passes to Catholic Charities.
Life Insurance. By transferring
ownership of a life insurance policy to Catholic Charities,
the cash value of the policy, as well as subsequent premium
payments, may be deductible charitable contributions. This
is an effective gift if you purchased life insurance for protection
of beneficiaries who no longer need such security.
All of the above are general descriptions
of what can be complex transactions. For more information
